Waterbury Hospital’s post-graduate year one (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency Program is accredited by American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP) with two residency positions offered this year. Our mission is to be clinically-focused, sharing the responsibility for the optimal outcome of a patient’s drug therapy in collaboration with physicians, clinical staff, patients and families, while providing outcome-based and cost-effective care to patients across the healthcare continuum. The purpose of a PGY-1 pharmacy residency is to prepare pharmacists for clinical practice. Our program consists of one-year of high intensity training in all aspects of hospital pharmacy practice including internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, pain management, psychiatry, pharmacy informatics, nutrition, neonatology and administration. Residents have an opportunity to develop clinical and teaching skills, pharmaceutical knowledge, and behaviors required for the successful provision of pharmaceutical care in the inpatient and ambulatory care settings. It is designed to be clinical in nature and provide working knowledge, along with experience to enable the resident to assume a leadership role in hospital pharmacy. Our goal of training is to develop the resident’s independent practice skills and confidence in a variety of general practice and specialty areas.
